Goofs

Continuity: AJ removes his shirt during the close-up in-store dancing scene. The long shot shows it back on, and then another close shot shows it off.

Continuity: AJ's jacket when he gives Warren his ID card.

Continuity: Joe is seen filling up the money bag in the background while Lucas is talking to Mitchell and when the shot comes to Joe, he goes through the exact same actions again.

Continuity: Gina is seen throwing money into the "help Lucas pile" twice.

Continuity: Eddie's shirt unbuttons itself momentarily.

Continuity: When Corey is on the roof talking to AJ after the Rex Manning incident, her hair is in her shirt. Then the camera angle switches and it is out of her shirt. Then the camera angle switches again and it is back IN her shirt. Continuity: On the roof when Corey puts her shirt back on, her hair is in her shirt, then out, then back in.

Continuity: The button reading "STU-PID" can be seen lying on top of the pile of buttons, and in the next shot, is being taken from the button-making machine and thrown onto the pile. (This is not necessarily an error; she could have made multiple buttons.--SR)

Continuity: When Gina and Corey are talking and Corey takes off her bra it can be seen on the table, then at the end of the table, then gone, and Eddie picks it up off the ground.

Continuity: At the end A.J. sells his "Alice in Chains" painting, and then moments later it is seen still behind him.

Continuity: In the car, Gina takes hold of the Rex Manning record with her left hand, reaching over her right arm which is on the wheel. In the next shot she holds the record in her right hand, and her left is on the wheel.

Audio/visual unsynchronized: During the rave, Berko points to Gina and tells her to take the lead and sing the song. He can be heard playing a guitar chord although he is still pointing at Gina.

Continuity: Gina took the lead once before Berko told her to. (I don't think this is an error--she didn't sing a verse, she sang the chorus. Why would she be up there except to sing? -- SR)

Continuity: When Lucas is in the casino at the craps table, after winning the first roll, he picks up the dice and then goes into his "save the empire" speech. After stating he would buy the table a drink if he wins again, the table attendant pushes the dice over to him.

Continuity: Deb's nose ring changes sides.

Continuity: In the very first shot of the movie, we see all of the band's equipment already set up on the roof, even though later they are seen hauling it all up there before the big midnight show.

Audio/visual unsynchronized: The sound of a needle scratching on a record can be heard every time the music is stopped abruptly in the store, despite the fact that they are clearly playing compact disks[sic].

Continuity: When the staff is dancing to Rex Manning, Deb takes off A.J.'s shirt. In the next shot he is seen with his shirt, and then again without it.

Continuity: When Joe in drumming in his office, Lucas puts on phone in intercom to play the music in the store. However, when Mitch comes in and the music is turned off, we hear the sound of the stereo in the store turning off.
Trivia

A sign by the register that says "Have a nice daze" shows the logo for Dazed and Confused (1993). Rory Cochrane, who plays Lucas, played Slater in Dazed and Confused.

Robin Tunney's character has a horizontal suicide-attempt scar on her wrist. In The Craft, her character has a vertical suicide-attempt scar.

The movie was originally filmed as two days but was cut and fit to one.

A DVD version released in 2003 entitled "Empire Records Remix, the Fan Edition" featured a new edit of the film with scenes never seen before, along with new deleted scenes, special features, and more.

At the time this movie was made, Coyote Shivers was married to Bebe Buell, which made him the step-father of co-star Liv Tyler.

Warren, played by Brendan Sexton III, was supposed to have a sister, but like Tobey Maguire, her scenes and ultimately her character was deleted from the final cut of the film. (I have read that this was due to illness for both Dianna Miranda and Tobey Maguire. -- SR)

The movie was written by a former employee of Tower Records store #166 (Christown Mall) in Phoenix, Arizona. When the film was released and for a long time afterward, a number of her former coworkers still working cited anecdotes and other elements of the film that related to the store. This store closed in early 2005, ten years after the film's release.
